ROMANESQUE ART
Romanesque art originated in Burgundy (France). From there, it was developed in western
Europe during the 11th and 12th centuries aided by the Order of Cluny and the pilgrimages
to Santiago de Compostela. Due to the religious nature of feudal society, this form of art
was linked to Church buildings, mainly in rural areas.
The main features of the __________ were:
• Floor plan: churches were built in the form of a __________, with two arms of
different lengths. The naves were separated by pillars, which helped support the
weight of the roof. There was a semi-circular area at the end of the church, known
as apse.
• The roof of the building was formed by a __________. At the intersection of the
two arms there could be a dome.
• The walls were very thick; they were made of ashlars (cut stone blocks), reinforced
by __________.
• There were few openings and they were tapered across the thickness of the wall.
This gave the outside a solid appearance
• The interior was dark, producing an atmosphere of meditation excellent to pray.
• At the feet, there could be two towers.
